Language and communication are central to our everyday interactions. Global trends and technological advances have reduced distances, bringing nations and languages into our homes,
connecting us with every part of the globe and increasing opportunities for trade, travel and employment. The Modern Languages Syllabus focuses on developing students’ ability to
communicate in three of the languages in use in the Americas – French, Portuguese and Spanish.

As students develop the competence to listen, speak, read and write in these languages and interpret aspects of the culture in which the languages are embedded, they will acquire the means
to facilitate deeper interaction with our neighbors. Ultimately, students will be equipped to meet the needs of living, studying and working in a multilingual region and in a culturally and
linguistically diverse world.

The syllabus has been organized around three main concepts: Functions and Notions, Settings and Topics, and Grammar and Lexis. In the Syllabus, emphasis is placed on the students’ ability
to use the target language in a functional way. Therefore, the basic functions needed for communication are identified. It is intended that these functions should be the core of the
instructional planning process.

This approach used in organizing the syllabus seeks to shift attention away from a purely structural approach to a more communicative one. It is expected that students following this
syllabus will be able to carry out these functions in the target language.

The CSEC Integrated Science syllabus is based on three themes – The Organism and Its Environment, The Home and Workplace, and Earth’s Place in the Universe –
which adequately reflect the common areas of human activity and experience.
These themes form the unifying points of the syllabus which should, therefore, be seen as a coherent unit. The syllabus is redesigned with a greater emphasis on the integration and
application of scientific concepts and principles. Such an approach is adopted to develop those long-term transferable skills of ethical conduct, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, and
innovation and communication. It encourages the use of various teaching and learning strategies to inculcate these skills that will prove useful in everyday life, while at the same time catering to
multiple intelligence and different learning styles and needs.

The syllabus is arranged in three sections sub-divided into specific objectives, corresponding explanatory notes and suggested practical activities.
Section A The Organism and Its Environment
Section B The Home and Workplace
Section C Earth’s Place in the Universe

Social Studies contributes to the effective development of the learner by increasing personal and social awareness, and by placing emphasis on values as well as on social
and interpersonal relationships. This syllabus seeks to ensure that students develop the necessary skills and at the same time introduces them to knowledge of social phenomena
that may enhance their effectiveness as social participants in the Caribbean community.

It is also intended that, through the syllabus, the process of valuing would be made conscious so that persons become aware of their position, thus enabling them to bring conscious criteria to
bear on their choices as social participants. Although the main focus of the syllabus is the Caribbean, opportunities have been provided for the treatment of international issues which have
a bearing on Caribbean development.

The syllabus content is organized into three major sections. Students are required to complete Sections A and B and one Option from Section C.

Section A Individual, Family and Society

Section B Sustainable Development and Use of Resources

  • (i) Development and Use of Resources
  • (ii) Regional Integration

This syllabus was developed in response to four (4) key objectives of the food and agriculture sector in the Caribbean; a region consisting mainly of Small Island Developing States. These objectives, which provide the framework for this syllabus, are to achieve the goal of food and
nutrition security; adopt sustainable agricultural approaches that are responsive to an uncertain physical and economic environment; contribute to economic diversification through transformation of communities and improvement of livelihoods; and ensure that the human resource capacity available to the sector is adequate in quantity and quality.

Agriculture is viewed in its widest sense as all activities including production, processing and marketing of plant crops and animals for human well-being. Sustainability, that is, satisfying the current and future needs of a society for food and non-food products, in an environmentally
friendly manner that also optimizes profitability to the producers, will be achieved by using sound scientific approaches to build on relevant indigenous knowledge. These approaches reflect the multidisciplinary nature of agriculture by encompassing both the natural and social sciences, and its multifunctionality through its linkages with other sectors. Additionally, to meet the stated objectives and enhance the competitiveness of Caribbean agriculture in the twenty-first century, the application of best practices and appropriate modern technologies will be critical.
This Agricultural Science Syllabus has been developed to address these requirements and to lay the foundation for meeting the human resource needs of the food and agriculture sector. Therefore, it incorporates the features of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(STEM) principles. It seeks to equip students for entry to the world of work as skilled workers
and for post-secondary and tertiary level agriculture education. Students will be exposed to learning experiences to equip them with relevant scientific and technical competencies, transferable skills such as critical thinking, innovativeness, team work, problem solving,
communication, and other life skills. Dispositions such as concern for others, ethical conduct, stewardship of resources, and a keen interest in participation in national, regional and international affairs will also be fostered. The learning environment is infused with Information
Communication Technologies (ICTs) and is particularly geared to engage youth by catering for different learning styles and needs, development of multiple intelligences, encouraging personal growth and development, and creating opportunity for entrepreneurship. To ensure regional relevance, students where applicable, will be recognized for the achievement of competencies in the Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ*1) that is aligned to the content in the syllabus.

This will further enhance the development of the Ideal Caribbean Person as articulated by the CARICOM Heads of Government who is aware of the importance of living in harmony with the environment; demonstrates multiple literacies, independent and critical thinking, questions the
beliefs and practices of the past and present, and brings this to bear on the innovative application of science and technology to problem-solving; and values and displays the creative imagination in its various manifestations and nurtures its development in the economic and entrepreneurial
spheres in all other areas of life. The syllabus will also prepare students for lifelong learning based on the Pillars of Learning described by UNESCO as it will contribute to a person who will learn how to do, learn how to live together and learn to transform themselves and society.

Geography is concerned with spatial expression, human and natural systems and the interrelationships between them. It facilitates an understanding of both the issues emerging from
human exploitation of natural resources and how natural resources may be managed to assure sustainability. It contributes to an awareness and understanding of the natural environment and
fosters an appreciation of its sustainability. It also encourages the development of a sense of responsibility in using and conserving the natural resources of the planet.
Spatial expression and map reading skills are essential to a study of the subject. These skills enable an individual to operate better in space by being able to establish a location and an
orientation whether inside a town or a rural area, or on a mountainside and to be able to read the landscape as well as assess the forces which have shaped them. The study of Geography,
therefore, prepares an individual not only for a career in fields such as environment planning and management, international relations and geographical information systems, but also helps to
develop skills that contribute to more meaningful and enjoyable travel and related leisure activities. The CSEC Geography syllabus, though not limited to a study of the Caribbean,
focuses on areas of study that are particularly relevant to Caribbean students. The syllabus utilizes Field Studies to concretize the link between the subject matter of Geography and the
methods of investigation associated with it. Students have an opportunity to observe, experience, reflect on, and draw conclusions about the intricate inter-dependence and inter-
relationships that comprise the human and natural systems. A student completing the CSEC Geography syllabus should be able to make informed and rational decisions and act.
